Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Illinois

The state of Illinois requires registration for certification with the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation to work as a pharmacy technician. There are two variations to apply for: Certified Pharmacy Technician and Student Pharmacy Technician.

To register as a pharmacy technician, submit a completed application along with a $40 application fee.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Illinois

The following are the minimum requirements for registering as a Certified Pharmacy Technician:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Provide proof of high school completion or GED, or currently attending high school.
• Must have graduated from an approved pharmacy technology training program OR verified training from the licensed pharmacist of the pharmacy where you are employed.
• Is of good moral character
• Have passed the ExCPT or PTCE examinatio

Minimum requirements for registering as a Student Pharmacy Technician are:

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Have proof of current attendance, or have graduated from high school or a GED program

Training Requirements

Training for pharmacy technology must be obtained from one of the programs or schools approved by the a nationally recognize accreditation agency, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Certification Requirements

National certification is required to be a Certified Pharmacy Technician in Illinois and is accepted either from the PTCB or ExCPT.
