What is Road Service?

Road Service is the act of assisting an individual’s vehicle when it breaks down, most commonly due to a dead battery, flat tire, crippled engine, or when a driver mistakenly runs out of gas.

How Road Service Works

Without Membership – Road service is usually included in car insurance. If it’s not included in car insurance or wasn’t purchased and a driver finds themself in need of road assistance, there’s commonly a local company willing to service the vehicle regardless of the location. However, it will come at a premium price. In this case, the service company will not know who the driver is, so they will need to have their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance on hand prior to the service technician’s arrival. After all the services performed on the vehicle are complete, they will hand the owner an invoice describing the rendered services and the payment that is due. With Membership – Most car insurance companies offer roadside assistance as an add-on for an extra fee such as Geico, State Farm, and USAA. Most notably there are AAA and OnStar that specialize in 24/7 roadside assistance that can be purchased separately from a car insurance plan. In any case, when roadside assistance is pre-purchased, drivers are protected if their vehicle breaks down. After roadside service is completed, the driver will receive a “paid” invoice due to it being pre-covered. It’s important to save the road service invoice after an incident for documentation.
